Taiwan — China without Culture Shock

Image
When we arrived in Taiwan, the news were all about the relationship between Taiwan and China. Locals were speculating whether the big brother would invade, and Taiwan strengthened its coast guard. We came from South Korea where there was a border dispute with North-Korea with similar speculations. Unlike the two Koreas, Taiwan and China have coexisted under a consensus. They accept that there is “One China”, but they have different interpretations of what it means. This time the upcoming election was causing tensions in Taiwan. We travelled to Taiwan for work exchange like to South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and Costa Rica earlier this year.

Mobile-Friendly Non-Flash Picasa Photo Slideshow

Image
The death of Flash has left Picasa users stranded as Flash is the only official way Google is offering for embedding slideshows into blogs and websites. Flash is not mobile-friendly, and many users have disabled it thanks to security issues. How to embed Picasa slideshows into blogs and website without flash? Why not iframe or slidemypics? It was possible to show slideshows using iframe until Picasa website started sending X-Frame-Options (XFO) headers to prevent clickjacking. Now it would require using a reverse-proxy for getting rid of XFO, making it both slow and dependent on the proxy provider. Another solution is to use a third party webservice called slidemypics. However, their service requires you to give them your Picasa login and password, which should not be necessary as Picasa API allows unauthenticated access to public albums, and slidemypics might vanish soon leaving you again stranded. For us, having to fix all slideshows in 200+ posts was not a tempting idea. Instead, we d…

Of Wedding Anniversaries: Goldfish-Ficus-Pineapple

Image
Today is our 11th wedding anniversary. To commemorate it we named it Goldfish-Ficus-Pineapple using the same logic as in some of our previous wedding anniversaries:

Cold War in South Korea

Image
We arrived in South Korea just before tensions grew in the border of North Korea. Both sides fired at each other some 60 kilometres from the capital, Seoul. North Korea presented an ultimatum: if South Korea will not stop broadcasting propaganda, North Korea is going to attack.

Japanese Anarchy in Tokyo and Kyoto

Image
We spent the summer in Tokyo in a local community of young salary men and women who were fed up with Japan's traditions, norms, and rules. They had chosen to live in a shared house, which is not a common form of dwelling in Japan although it is increasing in popularity among young single people thanks to the high cost of living in Japan. However, most Japanese prefer their privacy, or they live with their families.

Finn-Savotta Challenge: The First Year on the Road with Our New Savotta Backpacks

Image
We have travelled now one year with backpacks, Savotta LJK12 and Savotta 906, in 15 countries in Europe, the USA, Central America, and Asia. The backpacks are still in mint condition after exhausting 11 flights, 5 bus and 4 train trips, and one cruise around the world plus walking and hiking. Usually the flights, particularly baggage handling, are the biggest challenge to the durability of backpacks, and last year there were plenty of them as the list below shows. On the road we discovered some minor improvement ideas. Those have been implemented in the models that are currently for sale. For more information, please visit Finn-Savotta website.

Visiting Friends in Jakarta, Indonesia

Image
We visited friends in Jakarta and had a crash course in Indonesian culture including traditional Indonesian dance, family life, traffic, and delicacies — basically everything you need to know about Indonesia. Jakarta had no tourist hassle like Bali, Gili Air and Lombok in 2005 except the good old Indonesian visa corruption. See below some photos and a film from the government's dance school where the pupils had their annual exams.

How to Win more in the World of Tanks?

Image
How to succeed and win more in the World of Tanks and other multiplayer internet games? The recipe is simple: pay more. Those games are created by companies who exist to make as much money as possible. This is why the games are optimised for making money. If you do not want to pay, you end up losing more games and doing hideous, repetitive grinding to advance and level up. This was the case with Anarchy Online and the Belarussian made World of Tanks. The same principles apply to all freemium games. Instructions are based on experiences gathered during three years of intensive online gaming.

Free Porn From Malaysian Security Surveillance Cameras

Image
An unprecedented footage of amateur home porn videos has leaked onto the internet from Malaysian secret security surveillance cameras. The source of the leakage remains unknown. The police is investigating the matter and trying to get the videos removed, as they severely violate the privacy of both Malaysian and foreign citizens who have visited Malaysia.
